The newest Challenger Little League in Ohio, the Tuscarawas County Challengers (TC Challengers), is hosting a Grand Finale: A Home Run for All evening at their home field in Bolivar on Friday, June 18. The evening features the team’s final game of the season and is a visitor’s night. The fun begins at 6 p.m. at their field at Bolivar Wesleyan Church at 241 Pine St. NW. This event will be an opportunity for the community to support the current team. Kids and parents interested in joining the league next year are invited to watch the final game and see all the fun. “We are hoping that the community and interested parents and players will come out to support these kids and see what it is all about,” said Janine Garber, TC Challenger director. “We hold registration in January, so this is a chance for interested parents to come and see what TC Challengers is all about. We would like to double or even triple our league for next year.” Challenger is a division of Little League baseball that allows physically and mentally challenged children (ages 5-22) the opportunity to participate in the great American pastime - baseball. “Buddies” are provided to players when needed to encourage and assist, but players are encouraged to bat and make field plays whenever possible. The new TC Challengers is open to any child living in Tuscarawas County with special needs. In its first season, the league fielded one team of nine members. For some of these players, this will be the first time in uniform… their first time at bat hearing the encouragement of the crowd… their first experience being able to be “just like all of the other kids” and part of a baseball team. “It’s so much more than just the baseball, it’s the social aspect of it, the exercise, just getting them outdoors and letting them do this,” said head coach Dan McCauley of Bolivar. Coach McCauley has two sons involved with the team - Logan is a player and Justin is a buddy for Emily Page, 15, of Dennison. Max Burnham, 11, of Dover, also plays on the team. His dad, Jack, who also helps coach, said, “For years, he’s watched his siblings play, and now he’s got a chance to play too.” For more information on the league or the Home Run for All celebration, contact Janine Garber at 330-874-4183 or e-mail thegarbers@verizon.net.
