A nine-run second inning, capped off by a two-run home run from Karen Yoder, helped the Hiland Lady Hawks notch their first win of the season, a 13-8 triumph over West Holmes Friday, April 9, at West Holmes. “After hitting that home run, I feel like floating right now,” Yoder said. “It is a goal of mine to hit a home run every year.” Hiland had a scoring opportunity in the first inning, but Kate Hershberger was cut down trying to score. West Holmes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without a hit. Ayla Uhl walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a ground out by Kara Schrock. Latrisha Yoder got the second inning rally going with a base hit. The senior went 4-for-5 on the day, scoring twice and driving in three runs. She reached on an error, getting on base all five times she batted. “Latrisha has been hitting the ball extremely well,” Hiland coach Jill Lyons said. “She’s having a great year.” “I have the mentality of killing the ball every time I get up to the plate,” Latrisha said. “I just strive to hit better every time.” A walk and an error loaded the bases with nobody out against Hannah Frank. A ground ball to third forced Yoder out at home. Another grounder to third turned into an RBI as third baseman Brook Landon made the force at third. Diane Keim reached on an infield single to load the bases. Lindsey Kline then singled in a run. Kayla Boals relieved Frank at pitcher for West Holmes, and was greeted by a two-run single by Virginia Keim. Hershberger followed with an RBI single, and Latrisha Yoder blasted a two-run double. Frank replaced Boals, but served up a two-run homer by Karen Yoder. Frank struck out Jessica Gerber to finally end the carnage. Hiland scored nine runs on seven hits, a walk and two West Holmes errors. “Today was the best where we hit the ball consecutively. Every person in our lineup had a hit,” Lyons said. “I think the Holmes County rivalry had a lot to do with it. We kept telling the girls they were on the verge, they were almost there, and they just needed to break through. The rivalry probably helped get the momentum going a little bit more.” “They are one of our rivals. Playing against them is definitely a challenge, and it feels really good to come away with a win,” Karen Yoder said. “Hiland hit the snot out of the ball,” West Holmes coach Jaime Chenevey said. “When other teams get on a roll, and we have opportunities to stop them, we let cold hands get in the way. You can’t let a team stay in the game, or you can’t let a team do the things we let them do. We didn’t make the adjustments we needed to make.” Kayla Yoder started the Hiland third inning with a single and came around to score on a hit by Kline. Kylie Hawkins relieved Frank to get the final out of the inning. Trailing 10-1 in the bottom of the third, West Holmes scored four times to cut the lead in half. Uhl walked with one out and scored on a double by Schrock. Landon walked and moved up to second on a passed ball, and Emily Ross drove in two with a single. She went to second on the throw home. Ross went to third on a wild pitch and scored on one as well. Hiland scored twice in the fifth inning on a walk, an error, a wild pitch, a fielder’s choice and an RBI-single by Latrisha Yoder. The Lady Knights scored a run in the home half of the fifth, but things could’ve been a lot worse. Frank and Schrock both walked to start the frame, and a hard shot by Landon hit Schrock on the foot for a fielder’s choice. Ross grounded out to score Frank and Shelbie Henderson lined out sharply to short. “We didn’t quit. We came back. We’ve got to be better than we showed at the beginning of the game,” Chenevey said. “Katelyn (Hershberger) did a nice job of keeping us off-balance and keeping the ball on the outside of the plate, and we didn’t adjust to that very well. They certainly came ready to play today, and we did not. They wanted to win and we didn’t.” Kelsey Arnold tripled to open the sixth for West Holmes and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hawkins, but Hiland retaliated with a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI-single by Gerber. “We’ve hit the ball all season. We just have not had enough to get the win,” Lyons said. “We haven’t played all seven innings. We had some mental lapses there, but we had enough of a cushion where it didn’t hurt us, and the girls had enough confidence that they were able to get it done. “I think the monkey finally came off the backs of some of our girls,” the coach continued. “They saw that they are able to play with good teams. West Holmes is definitely a good team. They put the ball in play and are scrappy.” “It feels great to finally get that first win, especially against a rival team,” Latrisha Yoder said. “I think this will definitely boost our confidence, and I think it will bring us all together as a team.” West Holmes dips to 4-5 on the season. Hiland improved to 1-7. Waynedale sweeps Hiland Hiland’s win streak was snapped at one on Saturday, as Waynedale dealt the Lady Hawks a 12-1, 12-11 sweep of a doubleheader in Apple Creek. Erin Shoup held Hiland to four hits and allowed just one run in the opener. She struck out nine. Shoup helped her own cause with a triple and single. Karen Yoder worked an inning, giving up five runs on three hits. She walked two and struck out two. Virginia Keim gave up seven runs on seven hits over three innings. She walked two and fanned a pair. Kate Hershberger had two hits to lead the Lady Hawks on offense. Kate Yoder and Diane Keim added hits. Hiland got offensive in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning, opening up a 10-2 lead before the Golden Bears bounced back to pull out a 12-11 triumph, scoring seven times in the fourth inning off Hershberger, who walked six. She gave up nine runs on five hits. Virginia Keim took the loss in relief. Karen Yoder homered and singled. Hershberger tripled and singled. Kayla Yoder added two singles. Keim, Latrisha Yoder, Jessica Gerber and Kate Yoder also had hits for Hiland.
