Smithville’s Carr wins gold twice at D-III state track
Area athletes competed at the Division II and III track and field state tournaments June 6-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Smithville’s Kaitlyn Carr led the local girls by sweeping the Div. III distance titles. The junior won the 1,600 in 4:49.44 and the 3,200 in 10:48.87. She also anchored the sixth-place 4x800 relay team (9:39.64), which included Maryn Erdman, Tessa Duell and Claire Haas.
Erdman also competed in the 800, finishing third in 2:15.21. The sophomore also anchored the 14th-place 4x400 relay team (4:07.71), which included Hayden Steiner, Laina Steiner and Haas, and ran a leg on the 17th-place 4x200 team (1:47.86), which included Hayden Steiner, Haas and Claire Buller.
Waynedale’s 4x100 relay team of Anna Pittman, Callie Wolfe, Olivia Suttle and Nayeli Cruz finished seventh in Div. III in a school-record time of 50.41. Pittman also competed in the pole vault, finishing 11th with a vault of 10-6.
Dalton’s Samantha Kerby and Elandria Kindy competed in the Div. III pole vault event. Kerby finished 15th with a vault of 10 feet and Kindy 17th with a vault of 9-6.
Orrville’s Talon Beichler led the local boys qualifiers by earning All-Ohio honors in two events in Div. II. The senior finished second in the shot put with a throw of 60-6 ¾ and fifth in the discus with a toss of 165-2.
Waynedale’s Cade Herman also competed in the Div. II discus event, finishing eighth with a throw of 159-2 to earn All-Ohio honors.
Three other Red Riders competed in the tournament. Owen Lacy finished eighth in the 1,600 in 4:13.54 to earn All-Ohio honors, Caden Race finished 10th in the pole vault with a vault of 14 feet and Mark Lorson finished 12th in the high jump with a jump of 6-3.
Dalton’s Sammy Tomlinson earned All-Ohio honors in three events in Div. III. The senior finished third in the 100 in 10.89, eighth in the 200 in 22.28, and anchored the seventh-place 4x200 relay team (1:30.25), which included Aaron Miller, Hayden Cecil and Ely Hutson.
Smithville’s Joey Clabaugh competed in two events in Div. III. The senior earned All-Ohio honors in the 1,600 by finishing sixth in 4:18.41. He also competed in the 3,200, finishing 13th in 10:00.46.
Garrett Geiser competed in three events for the Smithies. The senior finished 12th in the 300 hurdles in 40.71 and 16th in the 110 hurdles in 15.71. He also anchored the 4x400 relay team, which included Isaiah Lee, Trei Durstine and Jacob Lanneaux and earned All-Ohio honors by finishing seventh in 3:26.42.
