Speedster Taryn Deetz leaving her mark at IVHS

When Taryn Deetz hangs up her spikes after her brilliant career at Indian Valley this summer, girls coach Diane Bell will be hard pressed to find another athlete who has brought as much to the Braves’ track program. “She has been to State in all four relays,” Bell said. “Not many kids can say that. And she’s All-Ohio in three of them.” Deetz was a two-time state placer on the 4x400 relay team, and placed in the 4x200. Last year, she was also part of the 4x100 relay team that placed fourth, joining graduated seniors Candace Casini and Kayla Caldwell and classmate Samantha Ohler. There isn’t much she can’t do on the track. “My goal is to find something she can’t win,” Bell said with a laugh. “She’s run everything from the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, the 400 and the 800. She even pole vaulted for the first time this year, and on the day of the event, she got her steps and she won. She’s just an incredible athlete...and a great kid.” Deetz holds six school records at Indian Valley. “My favorite event to run is probably any one of the relays,” Deetz said. “My absolute favorite race of all time was when we ran the 4x8 at Regionals my sophomore year. If we could’ve run that time at State, we would’ve placed. I don’t know how we did it that day, but everything just clicked.” “What I’m going to miss most when she graduates is her leadership,” Bell said. “She is such a great leader. I’m going to miss that more than all her points.” Deetz plans to attend college upon graduation, but doesn’t intend to run after high school. “I don’t plan to run in college,” Deetz said. “I’m going into early childhood education. Maybe I’ll come back and take Coach Bell’s spot.” She has been taking college courses through her senior year. “She’s an academic All-Ohioan,” Bell said. “I’d love to see her run in college.”
