The Franchise Miguel Sanchez named HCTs Spring Game Changer
The 2013 Holmes County Ticket Game Changer of the spring sports season was a tough choice for the staff at HCT and for our readers, who voted for their favorite to take home the title.
With some amazingly talented names like four-time State qualifier Carly Woodruff, three-time State qualifier Paiten Strother, first team All-Ohioan Gabe Snyder and second team All-Ohioan Kevin Schrock lurking, the choices were plenty, and quite difficult to narrow down.
In the end, when the smoke had cleared, the public had spoken their piece and the votes cast, the choices were narrowed down to West Holmes All-Ohioan Butch Baird and Hiland track star Miguel Sanchez.
Thanks to a strong Internet vote, Sanchez is being tabbed as this years HCT Spring Sports Season Game Changer.
For four seasons, the Hiland graduate had to battle some pretty diverse issues which stood in the way between success and not even being able to compete.
Namely, Hilands track program has struggled to field a team period, meaning that oftentimes Sanchez was left to fend for himself at big meets. In addition, the first time Sanchez ever practiced his one true love, the 300 hurdles, for a complete practice run was as a senior, the week before he participated at the Div. III Regional track meet.
That was because the Hiland track, if you would call it that, was not fit to practice on during his career.
While he did not qualify for State, narrowly missing a spot in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, he did show incredible heart and a desire to excel despite the adversity he faced throughout his career.
It all added up to school records in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, as well as the 200 meter sprint, where he also qualified for Regionals.
It was a spectacular senior season for the all-star sprinter, capping off a courageous career, one in which he pasted his name all over the Hiland track record books.
Congratulations Miguel Mikey Sanchez on being named the Holmes County Ticket Spring Sports Season Game Changer.
