West Holmes sends five to tennis District
What do you get when you put two of the area’s top singles tennis players together on one team? Sectional champions, that’s what.West Holmes freshman Rachel Nelson teamed up with her senior big sister Mary to win the Division II Sectional Monday at Dover. The Nelson sisters won the qualifying match 6-0, 6-0 against Cambridge’s top doubles team.
Also advancing were the second doubles team of Alyssa Read and Brittany Polen, who knocked off Claymont’s doubles team 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Eva Elpers advanced in singles, defeating Lauren Braido of Cambridge 6-0, 6-0 to advance through the first round. She then defeated Beaver Local’s Samantha Moore in straight sets as well.
“This is the first time West Holmes has gotten five players to district play,” said West Holmes coach Jason Otto. “Tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 6), everyone plays for seeding at Districts, which will be held Tuesday in Portsmouth.”
The Nelsons won the Sectional title defeating Claymont in the semis 6-0, 6-0, and then Dover in the finals 6-0, 6-0. They will be top seed at Districts.
Polen and Read will be seeded fourth.
Eva Elpers defeated second-seeded Claymont 6-1, 6-4 before falling in the championship match to state qualifier Emily Dawson 6-4, 6-0. Elpers will be the second seed at Districts.
