Wooster High offering pair of June basketball camps for area youth

The fruits of any season, good, bad or mediocre, hardly begin with the official start of that season. Instead, those outcomes have been determined by the work done – or not done – in the years and months prior to that. So, it’s not surprising that Wooster High boy’s basketball coach Craig Martin is taking an active interest in those youth by offering those future Generals an opportunity to learn the game by offering two youth basketball camps. The first camp is for boys entering grades seven and eight in the 2010-11 school year. It will be held June 6-10, from 1-4 p.m., in Wooster High’s main gym. Martin, his staff and current WHS basketball players, as well as recent graduates, will be working with those youths. The following week, June 13-17, from 1-3:30, there will be a camp for all Wooster and Wayne County area boys entering grades 3-6. That will also be held in the high school main gym. This is the third year Martin and his staff has offered both camps. “We will be focusing on skills and games and some contests and fun things,” said Martin of the camp for the younger boys. “It’s an opportunity to get to know the youth of the Wooster community and Wayne County community at-large. This camp is not just for Wooster kids. It’s open to the county kids as well to work on their skills and to start to cultivate a love for the game. “That’s important, especially with the youth camp, to expose them to the game and work on their skills, teaching them the fundamentals and giving them a base of skills that they can learn and work on to improve their game,” he added. “There are a lot of avenues through the recreation league (for kids); this is an opportunity for the staff at the high school level to introduce skills and fundamentals. “It’s good for us to get to know them and develop those relationships and build a bond and want them to come to our games. That helps our program and builds excitement for our program.” That is a key to the middle-school program as well, noted Martin. “The middle-school camp focuses more on our Wooster City School students,” said Martin. “We’re still talking about developing relationships. We’re working on fundamentals and starting to teach a little bit about Wooster basketball. We want to get those rising seventh-graders and eighth-graders to continue to build on that and strengthen those relationships that have developed. “Skills development is important, but it is just as important investing into those kids to develop a relationship. That will pay dividends for those students, as well as us. We want the team to be successful and those students to be successful.” Cost for each camp is $40, and financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Forms for the camps are available in the high school athletic office or online at: http://www.woostercityschools.org/hs/hs-athletics/content-page/basketball-boys. Coach Martin can be reached by emailing wstr_cmartin@woostercityschools.org or by calling 330-345-4000, ext. 3213. Participants may also sign up in person on the first day of camp.
