Worth likes what he's seeing out of his wrestlers
It may not mean much in the big scheme of things, but it meant a lot to Wooster High wrestling coach Troy Worth and his team. When Wooster headed to the Wendy’s Classic at Mapleton recently, the Generals were facing three other teams. At the end of the day, the Generals emerged 3-0 as they defeated the host Mounties, Cloverleaf and River View. After finishing 10th of 12 teams at the season-opening Coke Classic and 11th of 18 at the Wayne Invitational, even though Worth found those results misleading, that was a boost.
“I’ve been pretty happy,” said Worth. “We’ve had good leadership … and our young guys have been learning. We’re going to get better as time goes on.
“I was very pleased” with how the team did at the Wendy’s quad,” Worth added. “We did well against River View and did pretty well against Cloverleaf” in recording the wins.
The Generals hosted a strong triangular to close out 2009 as it invited Akron Hoban and Revere to Wooster, and it will open the new year with the 22-team J.C. Gorman at Mansfield Senior. While bringing home team hardware from the Gorman would be nice, what Worth wants to see is the continued improvement that has run throughout the team because that could bring even better results at the conference meet and beyond.
“Jordan Boreman has done really well and he’s a kid who works hard on his feet – his motor doesn’t stop running,” said Worth. “At 145, Anthony Catanzarite is a junior who has done well. He was second at the Coke and he really gets after kids. Keith Yost is 13-1 and his only loss was 4-1 to a kid from Minerva. He’s striving for districts and State and I think he is realizing it is a possibility. … Both Anthony and Keith have been dominating – they each have nine pins.
“At ’60, Zach Ellsworth has also done well and at ’71 we have sophomore DeVonta Anderson, who is starting to wrestle well after getting over some injuries. Justin Hughes is at 215 and he’s going down to 189. When he gets down to weight is when we’re going to see him (at his best). We have freshmen at 103 (Logan Gable) and 112 (Drew Worth) … Logan has only seen two freshmen and Drew has wrestled juniors and seniors and only two sophomores. They have been wrestling upperclassmen and have been able to bounce back, which is nice to see. Brenner Lewis at 135 has been very aggressive and is getting better.”
That improvement is what is critical. If that continues, it will allow the Generals to dream a little bigger as the season goes on.
