Yost heads to districts with 152 crown

Keith Yost went in with the idea of making the most of any opportunity, and he certainly did. The Wooster High School senior swept through his three matches at the North Canton Hoover Sectional to claim first place in the 152-pound weight class and move on to the Mentor District and a chance at a state berth. WHS coach Troy Worth actually had the opportunity to watch three of his charges, including Jordan Boreman and Zach Ellsworth, wrestle for a sectional title. Even though Yost was the only one to win, Worth was pleased with how his squad fared as it was seventh in the sectional field with 79 points. “Keith has been really good,” said Worth. “I’m pleased with how he is doing. He put together some good matches … and hopefully, he can take two more steps and make state. That’s our goal.” It won’t be easy. Although Yost improved to 36-3 on the year and was one of the top seeds for the Mentor District, “Keith has three really top-rated kids in his weight class,” said Worth. “He has one on his half of the bracket,” he added. “He won’t see the best one until the semis and that is the projected state champion (defending 145-pound state champion David Habat of St. Ignatius). If he wants to go, he will have to beat some good kids.” Boreman has saved his best for last. Improving to 26-12, “(Jordan) was pretty stoked with his semifinal win,” said Worth. “He told one of the assistant coaches, ‘That’s a load off my shoulders.’” Boreman dropped a 13-3 decision in his final match, but that hardly diminished what he did in the tournament. He won his first three matches of the tournament to get a crack at a title, but by then he had sealed his first district appearance. “Even though he lost, I’m pleased he made it,” said Worth, who noted Boreman and Yost were training partners all summer. “Jordan has superb conditioning. He runs every day and we’ll go in 15 minutes after practice he’s still working. We have to tell him that’s enough. That shows up in his matches. In the third period other kids are tired and he is still going strong.” Ellsworth lost a 10-3 decision to Lake’s Josh Erb in his final match to drop to 38-7 on the year, but he survived for another week regardless of that outcome. “Erb is a tough kid. Zach made a couple of mental mistakes and Erb capitalized,” said Worth. “In the third period, Zach had to push it (to try to catch Erb) … and it just didn’t work out. Zach wrestled well, though. “Jordan and Zach have to beat some good kids, too, and it will be more difficult because they finished second. Their weight classes are tough and probably more so than Keith’s. It’s a good district.” Two other Generals made a run for districts as sophomore Nate Stebbins (112) and 145-pounder Anthony Catanzarite, who was dealing with an injured thumb from the Ohio Cardinal Conference championships a week earlier, both finished sixth. “We were hoping for four (district qualifiers),” said Worth, who didn’t feel the injury weighed heavy in Catanzarite’s tournament although it limited him on certain moves. “A kid Anthony had beaten earlier in the day took fourth … so Anthony was disappointed. He was frustrated. … It’s a learning experience. “Nate was overpowered, but he’s a sophomore at 112 … and the kid that went was stronger. Nate wrestled well, but got caught with his head down. He has two more years, though.” Yost was slated to open his district tournament against sophomore Kyle Koncek (14-10) of Midpark, Boreman had to deal with 44-9 Alex Sweeney of Mentor and Ellsworth faced Ryan Winchell (31-13) of South in his opening match.
