Just a few of the ways president is destroying lives

Letter to the Editor,

There is nothing more devastating than losing a loved one. Life itself is so precious, so short and so fragile. Every human being feels the struggle to stay healthy and provide for their family. If you think the president you elected cares about your struggle, think again.

First, most of us have been and are contributing to Social Security all our work lives. In Ohio, 47% of residents depend on Social Security for half or more of their income. How will you pay your bills when your check doesn’t arrive because the agency has been so gutted by the administration? How will you buy food for your family?

Second, the president ordered funds for AID to stop. What does this mean for you? One possible scenario is life-threatening diseases occurring overseas, no longer being controlled through the help of USAID funds, will spread much more easily to our shores through simple global traveling. Remember the COVID pandemic?

Our president says the climate crisis is a hoax. Why? He doesn’t want to shortchange his billionaire friends in the oil and gas industry (“Drill baby drill”) who shower him with contributions and power. As with the tobacco industry, we have been fed a host of lies that our lungs are not hurt by smoke or now by pollution of particulate matter from burning oil, gas and coal or by plastic micro particles embedded in our bodies. Heat waves caused by too much carbon emissions are killing more people than any other cause of death.

Never mind your lives because what’s really important is to be rich. But guess what? Only the president and his rich pals get to benefit. He couldn’t care less about the mass of Americans. As we watch our democracy wither and the rich get richer, our lives go down the drain.
