Registration open for ‘Punch’ Maiwurm Memorial golf
The Salvation Army Orrville-Maiwurm Service Center announced the 29th annual Bob “Punch” Maiwurm Memorial Golf Scramble on Saturday, May 17 at Riceland Golf Course.
Amateur and experienced players are invited for a day of golfing that will kick off with check-in and breakfast from 7-7:45 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Registration is $75 per person or $300 for a four-person team and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, breakfast and lunch.
Participants will have the chance to compete for prizes, with first place receiving a $400 cash prize, a $200 cash prize for the runners-up and third place winning a free round of golf, each provided by Riceland Golf Course. The first-place prize has been donated by the Ellis family in appreciation for the many years of leadership of The Salvation Army Orrville-Maiwurm Service Center provided by the Maiwurm/Brown families.
In addition to the tournament, participants can purchase mulligans, enter a 50/50 raffle sponsored by Brown’s Furniture and vie for hole contest prizes. There also will be a grand prize drawing for a $400 gift certificate for Brown’s Furniture.
This fundraiser pays tribute to Bob “Punch” Maiwurm, an avid golfer and the group’s founder and namesake. A small business owner with a servant’s heart, Maiwurm brought The Salvation Army to this region in 1939, running the organization out of his clothing store’s basement to aid those in need.
In 1984 he was recognized by The Salvation Army with the “Others” Award for his dedication and service. After 85 years of service, the group still strives to honor Maiwurm’s legacy and continue his mission by providing seasonal and emergency assistance to those living in the Orrville, Dalton, Marshallville, Kidron and North Lawrence communities. Maiwurm passed away in 1993.
Registration for the event opened April 7. To sign up, visit salarmy.us/Golf-Scramble, call 330-683-3138 or visit the office at 401 W. High St. in Orrville.
