For two weekends this month, the Wayne County Performing Arts Council will present Marvel Double Feature with two plays written based on the Marvel Comic Universe, the first superhero/comic production for the local nonprofit.

WaCPAC will present Marvel Double Feature on Oct. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. at Wayne Center for the Arts, 237 S. Walnut St., Wooster. Tickets are available online at www.wacpac.org/ and at the door.

Tara Martens directs “A Mirror of Most Value: A Miss Marvel Play.”

“It’s a play about Kamala Khan, aka Miss Marvel, as she learns to balance her everyday life with her newfound superhero identity,” Martens said.

She said although there are superhero elements, it’s really about how a teen balances the important aspects of her life.

With the exception of an adult actress playing Kamala’s mother, the cast is made up entirely of teenagers who are all double cast in both plays. Martens said it has been a fun experience watching the young actors portray more than one character.

The shows were chosen by Sutherland Singenstreu, who directs the other play in the double feature: “Hammered: A Thor and Loki Play.” The director described himself as somewhat of a Marvel nerd at the moment and said that as soon as he discovered the plays, he knew he needed to do them.

“Marvel nerds like myself, whether they like the comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is something really fun about seeing these characters come to life on stage,” Singenstreu said. “Secondly, the younger generation can really connect with these teen characters and their struggles with school, friends and family.”

Singenstreu said WaCPAC has brought theater to Wayne County for the past 42 years.

“From its founding, WaCPAC has been about producing high-quality theater that the younger people in our area can connect with,” he said, adding the group has created a close-knit theater community where everyone has a place whether on stage or off.

The audience is invited to come in costume if desired. Proceeds from the show will go toward funding future productions.

WaCPAC is always in need of volunteers for both on stage and off. For the upcoming show, they are looking for donations of cookies for concessions. Anyone interested in donating or volunteering is invited to contact the group by private messaging their Facebook page.

“I think everyone will enjoy this show,” Martens said. “Everyone remembers what it’s like to be an awkward teenager who has no idea what their place in the world is. That’s the heart of this story — being who you are to truly find yourself.

“And anyone who is a fan of superheroes will love this show. It’s funny and goofy. I would love if people dressed up as their favorite superhero or villain. What other theater show can you actively dress up for?”
