The resurgence of backyard poultry keeping is a global phenomenon, and the United States is experiencing a revival. This movement, fueled by a desire for self-sufficiency, increased food security, and a closer connection to one’s food source has led to a surge in demand for knowledge and resources to support successful backyard flock management.

Ohio State University Extension, recognizing this growing interest, has developed a comprehensive Backyard Poultry Certificate Course. The course emphasizes the importance of biosecurity practices as a critical component of responsible poultry ownership, particularly relevant in light of recent highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks.

Archaeological evidence suggests chickens were among the first animals domesticated. Their ability to convert readily available resources into food, along with their relatively low maintenance needs, made them a valuable asset for small-scale farmers and families alike. Through centuries chickens became an integral part of agricultural systems worldwide.

In the 20th century, industrialization and the rise of large-scale agriculture led to a shift away from backyard poultry keeping in many developed countries. However, the latter part of the 20th century and into the 21st saw a renewed interest in backyard poultry, spurred by several key factors.

A growing understanding of the environmental impact of industrialized food production systems has led many to seek more sustainable alternatives. Backyard poultry offers a more sustainable option, reducing reliance on large-scale industrial agriculture, minimizing food waste through consumption of scraps and providing natural fertilizer.

The farm-to-table movement has gained momentum, with consumers seeking fresh, locally produced food. Backyard poultry allows individuals to raise their own food, ensuring freshness, traceability and a deeper connection to the food-production process.

A desire for greater independence and self-reliance has contributed to backyard poultry’s popularity. Raising chickens allows individuals to take control of their food source, empowering them to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on commercially produced goods.

While the appeal of fresh, locally sourced eggs is undeniable, backyard poultry provides a range of benefits beyond culinary treats. Observing the natural cycle of life, from chick to egg production, fosters a greater appreciation for the food consumed and a more informed approach to food choices.

Raising chickens can become a family activity, from caring for chicks to feeding the flock, providing opportunities for shared learning, responsibility and bonding experiences. Creating a backyard habitat for chickens also can contribute to increased biodiversity by attracting beneficial insects and birds.

Ohio State University Extension’s Backyard Poultry Certificate Course is a self-paced online program designed to equip aspiring poultry keepers with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish and maintain healthy, productive flocks. The course covers a range of topics critical for success in backyard poultry keeping.

The course begins by providing an understanding of local regulations and ordinances surrounding backyard poultry in different U.S. states, cities and municipalities. This step ensures aspiring poultry keepers are compliant with legal frameworks and avoid potential problems.

Choosing the right breed, selecting healthy chicks and understanding the importance of biosecurity are all essential for establishing a healthy flock. The course provides guidance on these topics, helping participants avoid common pitfalls.

It also delves into the fundamentals of caring for chickens including proper feeding and watering techniques, understanding nutritional needs, and creating optimal housing environments.

Participants gain insight into the process of egg production, learn about factors that influence egg quality, and explore best practices for collecting, storing and using fresh eggs.

Finally, the course emphasizes the importance of proper sanitation, disease prevention and recognizing potential health challenges. It highlights the crucial role veterinary care plays in maintaining the health and well-being of the flock. Moreover, it underscores the importance of biosecurity practices in protecting flocks from outbreaks of HPAI and provides practical guidance on measures such as limiting contact with wild birds, maintaining a clean environment and following proper disinfection protocols.

One of the key strengths of Ohio State’s Backyard Poultry Certificate Course is its flexibility. Offered entirely online, it allows aspiring poultry keepers to learn at their own pace, fitting the course into their individual schedules. This self-paced format eliminates the need for scheduled classes.
