A giving tradition from the Holmes County 4-H Sheep Committee carries on, and as has been the case over the past several years, the organization is preparing to give away another lamb to a young newcomer who would like to enter the fold.

The Holmes County Sheep Committee announced a market lamb giveaway for the 2023 4-H year. The lamb will be a donation from the Holmes County 4-H Sheep Committee in an effort to promote sheep projects for the Holmes County Fair.

The giveaway is open to all first-year sheep project participants and not just first-year 4-Hers.

Several years ago committee members Nate Klink, Craig Houin and Kevin Fair were at a sheep committee meeting and began talking about ways to build numbers and generate and entice kids to raise sheep. They came up with the lamb giveaway, and since then they have been presenting the lamb giveaway project.

Knowing 4-H animal projects can be expensive, the idea for the giveaway was to help carve off some of that expense for a newcomer.

To enter, applicants will submit a short essay describing themselves and how they plan to care for the project animal. The essay should include housing, feeding, showing and selling the market lamb. All essays must be submitted to the OSU Extension by April 1 at 4:30 p.m.

One winner will be selected and notified by the Holmes County 4-H Sheep Committee.
For any information related to the essay or other questions with 4-H sheep projects, call sheep committee member Nate Klink at 330-231-6457.
