“The Straight Story”
"The Straight Story" — (G)DM: No that is not a typographical error, this made-for-adults movie was honestly rated "G".
How strange is that in today's world? Not even the Christian movie "The Omega Code" could claim a "G".
What's even more out-of-this-world, is that this "G" rated movie was directed by Master of Weirdness, David Lynch of "Blue Velvet" and "Twin Peaks" fame.
Do you want a third shocker? This movie features all old-timers (as far as the movie industry goes, anyway). Almost everyone in it is collecting social security.
Let's see, a "G" rated movie about an old man traveling across two states on his lawn mower that's aimed at adults, with no blood, little foul language and David Lynch directing? That sounds like a big-time loser.
The only problem you'll encounter on the way to hating this movie, is that it is highly entertaining for all ages, is filled with great performances and provides an intelligent, sometimes humorous and heartwarming look into what it's like to grow old.
Richard Farnsworth will be nominated for an academy award, and he will win for his portrayal of the tractor-driving Mr. Straight.
