A hunk of cheese weighing in at more than 25 pounds currently sits regally on display at Troyer's Country Market. That's 25 pounds of pure mouthwatering Swiss cheese just waiting for someone to take a bite. But this is no ordinary cheese. This big cheese is Guggisberg's Grand Champion Swiss Cheese from the Ohio Swiss Festival, and it has a special role to play in the hands, and the mouths, of the community.

From Oct. 10-22, Troyer's Country Market will hold a raffle for this cheese. Twenty winners will be awarded a one-pound chunk of the cheese. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5, with 100 percent of the ticket sales benefiting Holmes County Hospice. Additionally, Troyer's Cheese will match the total ticket sales and will present a check to Hospice of Holmes County at the end of the raffle.

This is just another way of saying thank you for local community support, said John Troyer, owner of Troyer's Country Market. "We just had our customer appreciation anniversary sale and we're looking at what else we can do for our community."

And what better way to show appreciation than offering large chunks of award-winning cheese, all for the benefit of a local charity?

The 25.46-pound block of cheese up for grabs was a grand champion at the Ohio Swiss Festival, which is no easy feat given the rigid grading standards and competition at the festival. This cheese is a step above the rest, said Troyer.

"To me this is some of the best cheese that I have ever seen at the festival," said Troyer, who has had experience judging the cheeses. "It's just a beautiful piece of cheese, the whole formation is absolutely amazing."

Anyone who buys a raffle ticket not only has the chance to taste the prized cheese, they get to indulge in a whole pound of it, something that Troyer's customers are sure to enjoy.

"Swiss cheese is a flagship item of our company, so we felt this raffle and our client base went really well together," explained Troyer.

But the purpose of this raffle is not only to get good cheese into the hands of good customers. The proceeds, plus Troyer's determination to match the dollar amount of ticket sales, will be given to a local charity that holds a special place in the hearts of the Troyers after the organization helped the family through a difficult time.

"Hospice had been a great support for my brother, James, when his previous wife had passed away," said Troyer.

Hospice of Holmes County is an organization that offers compassionate and comprehensive home care for seriously ill patients throughout the Holmes County area.

"We wanted to involve our community by supporting Hospice because we can't do it alone," said Troyer. "It takes the whole community to make an impact."

For a chance to win a chunk of the cheese, visit the register at Troyer's Country Market at 5201 CR 77, Millersburg 44654 to purchase a ticket.
