Farmerstown is a good place to send visitors who want to see a slice of real Amish Country. A small village removed by several secondary roads from the larger tourist centers, Farmerstown is home to several traditional businesses and craftspeople, which will be the focus of this year’s summer Farmerstown Frolic. Merchants in and around Farmerstown will be offering reduced prices, drawings and other incentives for visitors during the week of July 5 through July 9, though not all stores are participating each day. Edwin Yoder of Farmerstown Shoe N’ Gift Shop at 2730 state Route 557 said that Tuesday and Saturday will be the big days for shoppers at his store. “We have our big sale days Tuesday and Saturday mainly, though a lot of our merchandise is on sale all week long.” Yoder said Saturday, July 9 will mark the store’s annual customer appreciation day. “We offer our customers free ice cream treats and pastries that day.” Saturday is also the annual garage sale, made up of whatever is left from the week’s sales events at Farmerstown Shoe N’ Gift Shop. Everything in the garage sale area is 50 percent off Saturday, July 9. Edwin Yoder said there’s a new promotion for this year’s Frolic at Farmerstown Shoe N’ Gift Shop. Customers who purchase $150 or more in merchandise during the week will be entered in a drawing to win two free train tickets to any destination in the contiguous United States. “The train ticket giveaway is a new thing for us this year that we are excited about,” he said. Farmerstown Upholstered Furniture at 2791 TR 181 offers more than upholstered furniture, Dennis Yoder said. “We have a line of doll furniture and other things we make.” Dennis Yoder said the shop will be offering discounts on one of the most popular items the store carries, their detergents, which Dennis Yoder said are biodegradable. “We offer 10 percent off storewide on Tuesday, July 5 and Wednesday, July 6 that week,” said Dennis Yoder of Farmerstown Upholstered Furniture. Edwin Yoder at Farmerstown Shoe N’ Gift Shop said there are other stores with events and special discounts for the Farmerstown Frolic that week and community events as well. A benefit dinner and bake sale to aid an area family with medical bills is going on at the schoolhouse on Tuesday. “The Farmerstown Livestock Auction will be going on that Tuesday as always,” Edwin Yoder said, “And a lot of families all around the area will be having garage sales.” The livestock auction is at 2793 state Route 557. Farmerstown is home to makers of handcrafted furniture, wicker, harness and leather goods, brooms, and many other traditional offerings. It is well worth taking the time to explore the genuine Amish crafts and experience the slow paced charm of Amish Country to be found touring Route 557. Nearby are Farmerstown Furniture at 3155 state Route 557 and the Hershberger Antique Mall at 3245 state Route 557. Spend your Fourth of July holiday week exploring the best of Amish Country at the Farmerstown Frolic for plenty of savings, food and helping with good causes.
