A primer on natural burial Northern Ohio, the program Going Green to the Grave will be held Thursday, May 13, at the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, from 6:30-8 p.m. Presenters include Joe Sehee, Gordon Maupin and Brian Hanner. Sehee is the executive director of the Green Burial Council and a noted authority on green end-of-life care. Maupin, the executive director of The Wilderness Center, Inc., is also the founder of Foxfield Preserve, Ohio’s first nature preserve cemetery. Hanner is the chairman of Geib funeral homes, crematories and remembrance centers. Geib is the first regional provider of natural burial service plans accredited by the Green Burial Council. Learn what makes a green funeral “green” and discover your local options in natural funerals, as well as asking questions from local and national experts. A preview of locally made green burial caskets, burial shrouds and urns will be available from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and again from 8-9 p.m., following the program. “We are pleased to host the authority on green burial in the United States, Mr. Joe Sehee, from the Green Burial Council. Joe will be on hand to provide an update of the emerging trends in ecological burial and to recognize the public-private collaboration of organizations like Foxfield Preserve at The Wilderness Center of Wilmot, and the Geib funeral homes, crematories and remembrance centers, the area’s first funeral service provider certified by the Green Burial Council. Together, these organizations bring families expanded options for caring for their loved ones in a more environmentally conscious way than previously available,” said Hanner. “Gordon Maupin of The Wilderness Center will showcase the vision he had for a nature preserve cemetery – and the evolution of the vision from idea to reality in 2008. Someday, when the history of green burial is written, Gordon will be properly recognized for his pioneering combination of ecological and entrepreneurial spirit that lead to Foxfield Preserve being the first nature preserve cemetery operated by a not-for profit land conservation in our nation,” Hanner added.
