Twenty years ago, Derryl Troyer and Jonas Yoder were coworkers at a company specializing in ceramic bathroom accessories when they first started talking about going into business for themselves. Yoder was a foreman, Troyer was in purchasing, and the two worked together quite a bit. Troyer could tell from the beginning that they’d make good business partners and could see how the two could complement one another. “Jonas is a go-getter,” said Troyer. “He’s very much into sales and very good at it, while I’m more comfortable with the business side of things.” When the opportunity came to buy a small window company, they entertained the possibility. Neither of the men knew anything about windows, but Yoder checked into it anyway. Troyer remembered how they almost decided to pass it by. “After Jonas first looked at it and told me a little bit about it, he said he didn’t think it was something we would want to pursue. But the more we talked about it, the more we thought it might be just what we wanted.” After taking another look, they agreed to buy the company as a joint venture. “We heard all the warnings about partnerships before we did it,” Troyer said, “but we decided to do it anyway, and it has been great.” Both realized to have a good partner, you need to be one. Yoder said Derryl does a lot of paperwork and does an excellent job. That was the beginning of Yoder Window, a company that has continued to grow and expand to serve their customers with excellence for 20 years. ----- When Jonas Yoder and Derryl Troyer first started operating Yoder Window 20 years ago, the company had just two employees. Derryl Troyer was still working full time elsewhere, and Jonas Yoder was running the daily operations himself. Yoder said that, with a lot of hard work, the full-service window company eventually expanded to their current 20 employees. “We worked a lot of hours,” said Yoder, “and it grew until I told Derryl I either have to hire someone, or he had to quit his job.” Troyer decided to quit his job and work at Yoder Window full time. Now each of the men run their own aspect of the business, meeting every morning to go over anything that needs to be discussed. They find the partnership is working very well and that they do, indeed, complement one another, each having a different set of talents and specialties to bring to the business. One thing Yoder and Troyer have in common is an absolute insistence on a very high level of quality and customer service. To that end, Yoder Window oversees every aspect of each job they accept, from the moment they meet the customer until the last window or door is installed. “The thing that sets us apart the most,” Yoder said, “is that we go to the customer’s home and measure the windows, custom build each window, and install them ourselves. We’re on the job from beginning to end.” Dave Judson, of Killbuck, first contacted Yoder Window to do work on one of his rental properties. “I was looking for someone locally, because I try to keep my business in the county,” Judson said. “I was very impressed with them. I like the way they do their work.” In fact, he liked the final product so much, he called them again when he needed windows for another rental property. To date, Yoder Window has installed windows and doors in seven of Judson’s rental buildings. “When you ask them a question, they fully answer it,” Judson said. “They tell you everything they’re going to do during each phase. They explained the whole thing to me. I was very satisfied.” Yoder said he believes their company has been so successful over the past 20 years because of their integrity, their valued customers, and their skilled employees who really care about their job. For the first 14 years, Yoder Window installed windows, doors and siding. They also fabricated glass and mirrors for furniture manufacturers, all services that they continue to provide, but now, they offer even more. In 2006, when they were having difficulty getting the kind of quality they wanted in the windows they were purchasing, Troyer and Yoder decided there was only one solution. “We had the opportunity to buy them out,” said Troyer, of the manufacturer from which they were purchasing their windows. He acknowledged that it was a big step for the company to take, but it was worth it. “Taking that on was definitely more intense, but now we have more control over the quality of our windows.” Now, Yoder said, since they manufacture the windows themselves, they’re able to check each window for how the sash fits into the frame. Beginning this month, Yoder Window will also start building their own thermal-pane, tri-seal glass units. Troyer said it’s another thing that sets them apart from other businesses. “Most companies our size buy their windows from a big bulk manufacturer,” Troyer said, “but we do everything ourselves.” In March, Yoder Window will celebrate 20 years of partnership in the window business, offering special pricing throughout the month. They look forward to continuing to serve the community with the kind of personalized service they’ve offered for the past two decades. Troyer said that’s because they have always put quality and integrity first. “We’ve been able to grow and be successful for 20 years because of our dedicated employees and the quality and service we provide.” For more information about Yoder Window’s 20th Anniversary Sale or to get a quote for windows or doors, contact Yoder Window at 330-695-6960.
