Members of 4-H who took a market steer or dairy steer project to the 2010 Holmes County Fair have been mailed a letter and registration card for the steer weigh-in scheduled for Dec. 18, at the Holmes County Fairgrounds, from 9 a.m. to noon. The weigh-in is mandatory in order to enter a steer project into the Holmes County Fair and Ohio State Fair. The steer will be weighed and tagged. The steer should be either banded or castrated when brought it to the weigh-in. Nose prints will again be required for 4-H and FFA steers that plan to be entered in the 2011 Ohio State Fair. EID tags are also required. The EID tags will come with a matching tamper proof management tag. For those new to the steer project, wish to know more, or did not receive the registration card, contact the OSU Extension Office at 330-674-3015. A Beef Performance and Carcass Quality Show is scheduled for the Ohio State Fair in August of 2011. This is an opportunity for junior market beef exhibitors to participate in the live show at the Ohio State Fair as well as compete in a carcass competition designed to tie knowledge of beef production with production of high-quality beef for consumers. In order to participate, the steer must be weighed by certified scales, tagged with a BPCQ tag and have its nose printed between Dec. 1 and Jan. 15, 2011. Call the OSU Extension Office at 330-674-3015 for more information.
