At the last meeting of the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival Foundation, Marsha Mari, president, reported that grant applications had been filed with Wal-Mart through the local store. Other grants are being investigated and will be applied for as soon as eligibility is determined. Plans for the foundation to host the spring meeting of the Ohio Festival and Events Association in Dover on March 6 and 7 are on schedule. A large attendance is expected because of the central location of Dover and the local tourism attractions. The Spring Fling, to be held at Tuscarawas Central Catholic Elementary April 24, at 6 p.m., was discussed. It was announced that Cheryll Stankiewicz and Deb Zinn had been contracted to be the disc jockeys for the dance portion of the dinner and dance event. This event is the kick-off event for the foundation every year and is used to honor the host and hostess from the preceding year and to formally announce the new host and hostess. Selected to host the 2010 festival are Francis and Dorothy Brogan, owners of Williams Furniture in Dover. It was announced that the foundation would begin the year by awarding eight scholarships at the Mayor’s Breakfast on August 13. More will be added as more funds become available. All Tuscarawas County high schools have been notified and received the 2010 scholarship application forms. Any Tuscarawas County high school senior or prior year recipient is eligible to apply and should ask their guidance counselor for the forms. The forms are also available through the festival Web site at www.tuscitalianamerican.org or e-mail tciaffi@roadrunner.com. Deadline for applications to be received is May 1. The next meeting will be held Feb. 17, at 7 p.m., in St. Joseph Family Life Center. Any person interested in assisting the foundation to provide scholarships for Tuscarawas County students is invited to attend.
