Being enough for ourselves

“I make him proud, and I make him smile. I was made in the image of a perfect king.”
—Megan Woods
I have a confession to make: I feel like I should be the last person to be writing about being enough. I look at people with nicer cars, bigger and nicer houses, and higher paying jobs than me, and I can feel inadequate.
I know I am smart enough, but I couldn’t justify going and earning a degree if I couldn’t physically do the job. Cerebral palsy is a pain in the back side. If being smart could guarantee you a job in any profession, I would have become a lawyer. Imagine my embarrassment when a teacher of mine saw me working at McDonald’s after getting out of high school. I wanted to run away and hide.
Being enough has nothing to do with our jobs, how much money we have or our educational background. It is an inside job. I often say joy and happiness come from the inside. Joy and happiness are the seeds of being enough. If we have no joy or happiness, we won’t feel like we are enough.
Do you have to feel like you are enough to actually be enough? No! When God made us, he put his stamp of approval on us. In other words we are enough because he said so. I have to think back when my brother called me names growing up. I told Mom, and she always asked if I turned into what I was called. That was her way of saying I am not what my brother called me. That was a really great lesson. It is good for all of us to learn we are not what others say; we are who God says we are.
So how do we become enough? I’m not really sure if I know the answer to that question. Maybe there is no magic bullet that will solve all our problems. However, what I do know is we can watch what we listen to and what we read. The internet has a lot of trolls on it that just want to bring people down to their level. However, we don’t have to read all the comments we see online. We can go to websites we know will cheer us up.
Another thing we can do is join a church, join a club or volunteer somewhere. We are not meant to go it alone. We are meant be in a community. We need other people to lift us up, and helping other people is good for our mind and soul.
I’m hoping I gave you a basis that will help you get to a place where you can feel you are enough.
