Memorial Day is in honor of our country’s heroes who gave their all defending our country.

Second, it is considered by many to be the beginning of my favorite time of the year — summer! The weather is warm, the days are long, the nights are short, flowers are blooming, and trees are leafy and full.

This Memorial Day we got to spend some time with a number of family members. Being with family, especially those who don’t live close by, is such a joy, especially our 2 1/2-year-old great-grandson, who is such a happy little boy. He loves cars, trains and things that make noise. Fortunately, he lives with his parents and not with us, so the noisemaker we got for him won’t bother us.

We also got to spend time with a granddog. He’s a great big fellow but still a puppy. He wants lots of attention, a piece of whatever we are eating, and constant pets and pats. Despite his size he will always try to get in whomever’s lap is closest. Once he gets a lap and gets comfortable, the lap owner gets stuck.

Actually, little children and our pets make our family gatherings such fun. We adults may talk about our jobs and our plans for the future, but little children just want to run around laughing and playing. It was a wonderful visit. We ate too much and laughed a lot, and by the end of our visit, we were happily exhausted and already looking forward to the next family gathering. It is such a shame so many family members live so far away from each other.

It was so lovely to spend time with our great-grandson, his parents, and his uncles and aunts. It was especially lovely that everyone got along. Have to add that spending time with our youngest great-grandbaby made our trip worth every minute and mile it took to see him. Little guys grow up so fast, and before you know it, they are teenagers.

And granddogs also grow up very quickly. Our granddog has already gotten big, but he still has the goofy brain of a puppy. He wants to play with whomever he meets, and he had plenty of new folks to throw a ball for him.

But he was just a part of a great day all the way around, and I was happy to be a part of it, making new memories that will keep me company until the next time.
