It’s mud season

It’s mud season

I don’t want to jinks it, but I do believe spring has arrived, at least our house thinks so. It is almost screaming to be spring cleaned.

That is not our favorite part of spring, but it is a homeowner’s requirement. Actually the inside of our place is relatively clean; it is the outside that needs attention.

The front steps are supposed to be white; they aren’t. They are a sort of brushed brown in color, as is the front stoop. The lower part of the front door also is in dire need of a good scrubbing.

This is all our dogs’ fault. They like to romp in the mud and then bounce up the stairs and try to push open the doors with their muddy paws. That is the other part of spring we aren’t too fond of: those April showers that bring mud — then flowers.

Mud is everywhere, hiding right under the grass, so when you step onto our lawn, the mud grabs your foot and slathers it with wet earth. It is a good idea to wear rain boots outside, but our dogs refuse. We can leave our muddy boots outside, but the dogs are securely attached to their paws.

Our rugs need a good shampooing too. But why bother during the muddy season? What our house needs is a mud room at the front entrance. That way humans and dogs can remove the mud before tromping through the house. Unfortunately our mud room is at the rear, and no one ever uses that door.

We are giving serious thought to having our lawn covered in rocks. That way we won’t have the worry of weeds or mud. That is unless our house objects and gets upset, or the mud swallows the rocks. Another option is building a deck that covers the lawn, but that just might be a bit expensive — mud-free but expensive.
