Our dogs eat anything but a pill

We have two small dogs that are sweet and smart. They are great pets, and we love them dearly. However, they can drive us to distraction with their frequent barking and almost as frequent accidents on the floors of our poor house. They can’t help when their tummies get upset and their latest meal is regurgitated. That happens to us humans too, but we usually make it to the bathroom in time.
My poor Taller Half long ago assumed the duty of cleaning up behind our companions. He does an awesome job, but unfortunately as our pups age, those occurrences happen a bit more frequently. Our vet has informed us that dogs are known to throw up rather easily when they eat something they shouldn’t. Evidently, ours make a practice of swallowing anything they happen upon. It’s not that they aren’t fed twice a day and given treats often. They aren’t hungry; they are just scavengers.
We can take our furry children for a walk or just to play in the yard, and they manage to find something unpleasant to gobble up. They manage to hold it until they come inside, and then they spew it on a rug. Why? Hunger isn’t the issue. Do they just like making a mess to keep Taller Half busy?
Though our two “smart” dogs will swallow anything nasty they can find that upsets their tummies, they will spit out any pill we try to give them, even if it’s hidden in a piece of hot dog. We once gave one of our pups a pill hidden in a piece of cheese and held his mouth shut until he had to swallow. In spite of that supposed swallow, the next morning we found that pill sans the cheese on the kitchen floor.
Thankfully, despite their propensity for eating bad things, our dogs are healthy. On the other hand, our floors and rugs require Taller Half’s cleanup attention rather frequently. Muzzles would prevent our pups from reckless trash eating, but they throw a screaming fit when those muzzles appear. Any ideas?
