This is one time when spiders are welcome

A couple of days ago when we opened our front door to bring in our dogs, a fly flew into our house like he was a welcomed guest. He wasn’t.

Flies are nasty insects that like to buzz around our houses contaminating everything they touch. Yuck! For some unknown reason, our big dog is terrified of those buzzing fiends and yelps whenever he sees one. The little dog tries her best to catch those flying demons but rarely does.

One morning we awoke to a dog whimpering. Our big dog was cowering in his bed while a fly flew around the room. Taller Half got up and attempted to swat the offending insect but only succeeded in scaring our little dog, who began to yelp and run wildly around the house. Though the sun wasn’t up yet, we were not ready to face the day.

In the process of fly hunting, I discovered a nest of spiders hidden in a corner near the ceiling. I am not a spider fan and yelled at my Taller Half to bring me the spider spray. He calmly refused and carefully pointed out that there were dead flies wrapped up in those spider webs. Actually, there were about three dead flies in that web. The spiders were better fly catchers than we and our little dog were.

We now have a nest of resident spiders living in a corner of our living room. Thankfully, they don’t roam about much, and their cache of dead flies has increased. They have even added a yellowjacket to their pantry.

Our big dog still runs amuck when the odd fly invades our house, but the flies don’t fly around for very long. In just a day or so, those flies managed to fly into the arms of our hungry spiders.
