“Some people don’t like change, but you need to embrace change if the alternative is disaster.” —Elon Musk

I love New Year’s Day. Why, you may ask? Because it is a reminder we all can start over again. No matter where we find ourselves in this crazy thing called life, we can start again.

Of course, we get those people who swear up and down that change it not possible. I feel change is too difficult for them, so their attitude is “why bother.” Change is very difficult. Mark Twain once said, “Nobody likes change, except for a wet baby.” However, we still believe we can hit the reset button in our lives every Jan. 1.

I believe no matter how difficult the change is that it can still be done. In the book, “Atomic Habits,” James Clear tells us to break down our goals to the bare minimum we can do. He worked with a man who lost a hundred pounds by going to the gym. The man began going five minutes at a time. He worked out five minutes and then just want home. I admit I thought that was a waste, but as time went on, he stayed longer and longer. Hey, whatever works. That’s what mama always told me.

When I started my writing career, I had no idea how I was going to write a column every two weeks. After all, I had just submitted an editorial. I don’t know how many times I wanted to quit. I didn’t have a college education, and I am far from the best speller. I was talking to a life coach friend of mine, and she asked me, “How do you eat an elephant?” Well, I’ve never eaten an elephant, but I eat steak one piece at a time. So that is how I write my column — one word at a time.

The person who wants change to take place instantly will never enjoy the reward of a job well done. In fact, when the going gets tough, they will lay down and roll over. I know people who have had everything handed to them, and when they need to change, they just get left behind. Like a tree with no roots can’t grow, they have nothing to dig deep and hold on to.

Is it your heath, your livelihood, your spouse? What or who do you need to change for? If your reason is not good enough, then change might be next to impossible. If your reason is good enough, you will keep fighting until the end. Think about the changes you need to make, and I will share my tips with you next time.
