Oh, the joy of mulching

Oh, the joy of mulching

We have learned the best way to keep our gardens weed-free and looking really good is to cover their dirt with mulch. Our house is so proud of her gardens and loves the style they give to her exterior. The problem is our house now desires more such gardens, and that requires her occupants to do a lot more gardening.

We were encouraged to put in a garden across the front of our house and fill it with flowers and bushes. That was the idea anyway.

Seems our place had standing water hiding under the grass along that front foundation. Grass might not object to standing water, but many flowers and plants do. It was just a matter of finding water-loving plants that would fit into that situation. A bunch of hostas volunteered and have taken their places in that muddy ground. So far they seem to be thriving. Our house is very pleased. Let’s hope she stays that way.

Last week we were slow to react to a fairly minor house problem, and our house got indignant. We immediately experienced a bad water leak from an outside spigot. It spewed water all over the already muddy new garden, and the result was an even muddier mess.

To hide that mess, we piled a thick layer of mulch over that poor garden, and it worked. The mess disappeared, the garden looks lovely and our house is thrilled. With any luck the standing water under the mulch will keep the new garden plantings well hydrated and they will flourish gloriously all summer long. Hurrah for mulch.
