On Sunday, March 2, Tuscarawas Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School celebrated the kickoff of its Building on Excellence Campaign. The event marked a milestone in TCC’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities while ensuring accessibility for all families within the community.

Principal Jennifer Calvo shared her enthusiasm for the event, which was the culmination of years of planning and preparation. The program came from an internal study conducted in 2017 and aimed at evaluating the specific needs of the school community.

The results drove TCC to adopt a four-pronged strategy that focuses on renovations and new constructions aimed at improving the educational experience for current and future students.

A cornerstone of TCC’s mission is ensuring education is accessible to all. Currently, over 90% of enrolled students benefit from 100% tuition assistance through EdChoice Scholarships. These scholarships alleviate financial barriers. This initiative enhances educational access for families across Tuscarawas County and beyond.

The inclusive nature of the TCC community was highlighted during the event, with 43% of students identified as non-Catholic.

The Building on Excellence Campaign encompasses four key components. The first initiative involves the renovation of the school chapel to accommodate the growing student body, enhancing its capacity to approximately 250 people. Upgrades will include new walls, flooring, sound systems and pews to create a more welcoming and functional worship space.

The second initiative focuses on renovations to the lower level of the school, aimed at creating new visitor and varsity locker rooms. Hasenstab Architects from Akron will oversee this project alongside plans for a new field house/community center.

The third component of the campaign is the construction of a multipurpose field house/community center intended to serve as both a facility for TCC teams and a community space. The center will feature a walking track, golf simulator, batting cages and pickleball courts.

Lastly, TCC has launched the Teachers Endowment Fund, responding to feedback from constituents who emphasized the need for ongoing professional development opportunities. This fund aims to support teacher retention and ensure high-quality education for students.

During the kickoff event, attendees had the opportunity to learn more about the EdChoice Scholarship program, with representatives on hand to provide guidance and answer questions about the application process. This interaction allowed families to understand how to take advantage of the financial assistance available to them.

Bishop Fernandez honored the event with his presence, and the turnout exceeded expectations, drawing over 200 attendees. The gathering was not just a fundraising effort, but also a celebration of TCC’s ongoing commitment to creating a supportive and nurturing educational environment.

Those interested in learning more about the ongoing EdChoice Scholarships or how to support the school can call Tuscarawas Central Catholic Development Director Michelle Angelini at 330-343-3302.
