Winesburg Elementary second grade teacher Sara Cole has built her career on connection — something she didn’t fully expect when she first entered the classroom.

“I didn’t realize the close bond and relationships I would develop with the kids, their families and my colleagues,” she said.

Cole, a graduate of Strasburg High School, earned her bachelor’s degree from University of Mount Union and a master’s degree from Marietta College. Growing up surrounded by children, thanks to her mother’s in-home babysitting, she always knew she wanted to be a part of kids’ lives.

“My mom babysat all my life, so kids are and were all I knew and wanted to be a part of,” Cole said.

Now over two decades into her teaching career, Cole said the most rewarding moments come when she sees her students light up with understanding.

“(I love) the smiles, the hugs, the light bulbs turning on and the excitement that comes with it,” she said.

Still, teaching isn’t without challenges. Cole said one of the hardest parts is wondering if she’s doing enough each day to help every student feel safe, loved, valued and successful.

Outside the classroom Cole stays busy cheering on her daughter at band performances and swim meets. A former athlete herself — she played softball and basketball all four years of high school and continued softball in college — Cole said it’s a joy to watch her daughter shine in her own way. She also enjoys reading and spending time with family.
