Community and Christmas go hand in hand
Community and Christmas go hand in hand for the students at Immaculate Conception Elementary School.
The students in Ronna Coventry’s preschool and pre-K classes joined forces with the Knights of Columbus Council #576 in Dennison to fill the Warming Tree with over 50 coats and hundreds of hats, gloves, scarves, socks and underwear.
The Knights donated coats while students throughout the school stopped by the preschool classroom to donate items and place them on the Warming Tree, which has been a tradition for more than 15 years. These items are distributed throughout the community to those in need.
The school also participated in Jeans Day, donating money and nonperishable food items to the local food pantry, the Twin City Christian Service Center in Uhrichsville.
The students, staff and family members also participated in the Twin City Christmas Parade. They decorated the school for Light Up Dennison, and the preschool and pre-K classes served as the live nativity for the the evening. The students also performed Christmas plays.
The Polar Express is another event the school helps with by making the hot chocolate for the train rides, and the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum adds another place for the children to deliver their letters to Santa. The students in several classes wrote letters and mailed them in the mailbox at the depot. They sang at the ice skating rink for the chamber’s 12 Days of Christmas final drawing and then skated at the community rink.
“Christmas is a magical time for the students celebrating the birth of Jesus and the magical traditions of Santa and so many special events throughout the community,” Coventry said. “Our school is blessed to be in a community that embraces its children and their families and gives them so many ways to participate in the holidays and community.”
