Dover City Schools was selected among an elite group of school districts in Ohio to be awarded a $2.1 million k-12 literacy grant from the Ohio Department of Education.

“Dover has been selected as a model site and was one of only two school districts in Ohio to receive this literacy grant for grades k-12,” superintendent Carla Birney said. “It’s quite an accomplishment and a testament to the amazing work our staff is doing in regards to reading and literacy instruction.”

The school district has a comprehensive plan in place to use these additional resources to enhance the literacy programming and instruction.

“The four-year subgrant will focus on developing model literacy sites,” assistant superintendent Karie McCrate said. “We’ve added a literacy coach and will use the funding to enhance our literacy curriculum and for teaching training.”

This grant is important because it brings extra money from the state directly into the classroom and district. By seeking this grant, Dover is adding important programs and services to students while maintaining a lean operating budget.

“These additional funds will help support the great work happening in our classrooms and really enhance our core literacy instruction at all grade levels — all while not adding to our overall budget,” Birney said.
