East Elementary students helping a friend
Students at East Elementary in New Philadelphia have been learning about responsibility for themselves and for others. They were able to apply these skills firsthand on Saturday, Oct. 24. Both first and second grades held a fundraiser to support a classmate, Lane Eberhardt, a second grade student who is awaiting a heart transplant. East Elementary students participated in a bike run, and students donated money to ride their bikes on a course around the school.
They also donated items for a basket raffle. Each classroom created a themed basket for Saturday’s raffle. Themes included Quakers, movies, candy, games, and autumn items. After the bike run, students made ‘thinking of you’ cards for their friend and classmate. The fundraiser was a huge success, thanks to all of the students and families of East Elementary. The students raised more than $1,400 that will be put into an account for Eberhardt. When students were asked why they wanted to help, they answered, “To help our friend,” and “Because we would want someone to help us.”
