Jessy Matador, a musician and dancer from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will perform at The College of Wooster Saturday, Feb. 13. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 9 p.m. in the ballroom of Lowry Center, 1189 Beall Ave. Born in Congo Kinshasa, Matador represents the new generation of music described as Afro-Hip-Hop. His career began with The Broken Hearts. In 2005, he started his own band, The Selesao - an Elvis-like “dance with the pelvis” group. He has since produced a number of top-selling singles, including three in the past year, which have topped the charts in Africa, Belgium, and France. Matador’s performance is presented by UJAMAA, the Wooster Activities Crew, and the Student Government Association. It is sponsored by the cultural events committee, the French Department, the Africana Studies Department, the Center for Diversity and Global Engagement, Women of Images, Carribconnect, the Ambassadors program, the International Students Association, and the Wooster Chapter of the NAACP. Additional information is available by phone at 330-263-2145 or by e-mail at jfinn@wooster.edu.
