William McFadden of Millersburg, a senior at Central Christian School, recently earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs.

These programs celebrate students’ work in high school and showcase their academic performance. The academic honor is for rural, black, indigenous and/or Latino students.

McFadden received the National Rural and Small Town Award.

“William is a conscientious and diligent student, and these attributes help him to excel as a student at Central Christian School,” Central Christian School Principal Craig Martin said. “Our school is excited to celebrate William and his achievement for this national recognition for his academic excellence.

“There is so much that makes students at Central Christian unique, and William is a great example of a student that excels inside and outside the classroom. As a student William exemplifies Central Christian’s distinctives of academic excellence: faith formation, fine arts, multi-age relationships, opportunities for service and athletics with a purpose.”

McFadden is a member of Central’s cross country team, National Honor Society, Operation Connections, concert choir, Varsity Singers and Singing Comets. He also has participated in fall plays and was a Student Council member.

The criteria for eligible students includes the following:

—GPA of 3.5 or higher.

—PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment scores that are within the top 10% of assessment takers in each state for each award program or earned a score of three or higher on two or more AP Exams in ninth and 10th grade.

—Attend school in a rural area or small town or identify as African American/black, Hispanic American/Latino or indigenous/native.

“It’s becoming increasingly hard for students to be seen during the college recruitment process. We’re exceptionally proud of the National Recognition Programs for celebrating students who are at times overlooked but have shown their outstanding academic abilities,” said Tarlin Ray, senior vice president of BigFuture at College Board. “This is a benefit not only for students, but also for colleges and universities committed to recruiting diverse and talented students.”
