The University of Akron Wayne College recently announced its newest associate degree program—the associate of applied science in exercise science technology. The college is admitting students into the program for the fall semester. Exercise science technology prepares graduates for careers as fitness trainers, wellness coaches or other health and fitness paraprofessional positions. They will be trained to instruct and coach individuals and groups in various exercises and activities and to help clients achieve fitness goals. According to Ohio Labor Market Information published by the Department of Job and Family Services, jobs in fitness will grow 20 percent in Ohio by 2014. This associate degree also flows seamlessly into the bachelor’s degree in exercise science program at The University of Akron. Dr. Paulette Popovich, associate dean of instruction at Wayne College, is excited about the college’s new associate degree. “This program represents a new and key element in a degree pipeline for students interested in fitness and exercise science. This degree serves students by providing geographically-accessible career preparation in a medically-oriented field with growing opportunities,” said Popovich. “Our program graduates will then provide a pool of qualified fitness trainers and wellness coaches to meet demand in the growing preventative health care field.” Dr. John Roncone, assistant professor of physical education, and one of the college’s newest full-time faculty members, will coordinate the program for Wayne. “I am very excited about the exercise science program,” said Roncone. “It will provide many opportunities in the exercise/fitness discipline for students to contribute significantly to the field as well as to society, especially with the health disparities such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in this country. In addition, if graduates want to continue their education, this degree steps up into the bachelor’s degree in exercise science at the Akron campus. It’s a great opportunity for an individual to study, graduate and work as a professional in a discipline that has a direct impact on the health and wellness of today’s society.”
