Registrations are now being accepted for the Summer Fun Zone day camp at the Salvation Army, 809 Emmet Ave. NW, New Philadelphia. Camp is open to all elementary students in the area and will run weekly from June 15 through Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost for the camp is $100 per week with a 25% discount for additional siblings.

“We were left in a position to scramble getting the word out about camp, but we have been planning the activities for months,” said Barb Huff, program director at the Salvation Army Learning Zone. “It’s not quite the camp I envisioned with the restrictions brought about by the coronavirus, but I think we are still going to have a great time.”

Summer Fun Zone day camp includes breakfast and lunch, a curriculum that focuses on STEM activities, social/emotional lessons, and the chance to be with a small group of other children.

“I want to give the kids as much of a typical summer fun day as we can,” Huff said.

Activities include hands-on science experiments, indoor and outdoor games, water activities, and a summer reading program with prizes.

Following the governor’s office guidelines for child care centers opening back up under the pandemic, the Learning Zone has implemented new ways to minimize the potential spread of the virus such as a small class size, temperature checks, specific drop-off and pickup procedures, and rigid cleaning routines.
