The Smithville High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 25 new members on Nov. 3. The ceremony began with a welcome by NHS president John Kelbly. Vice President Tyler Moomaw read a scripture followed by an explanation of the society by treasurer Daniel Boyes. Co-adviser Lisa Howie introduced the current members by telling of their future plans. The address was delivered by Mr. Thomas Weckesser, a teacher, coach and football referee. His speech entitled “The ‘I’ Factor” showed how bringing intensity to any task can help one reach goals. Members then lit candles and described the four criteria of NHS. Justin Fath lit the candle of scholarship, Jordan McConnell spoke about service, Tristen Stoll represented leadership and Rachel Flory lit the candle of character. Co-adviser Joni Reichenbach then inducted the new members while describing the various activities in which each student is involved. The new members for this fall were Alyssa Allen, Brooke Aukerman, Willow Baer, Megan Baltic, Molly Baltic, Brett Bauman, Thomas Becker, Holly Blough, Kaitlin Conkle, Emily Daniels, Hannah Engle, Lindsey Erickson, Caleb Hostetler, Nathanael Lowe, Clint Maibach, Jacob McConnell, Mae Miller, Anna Muntin, Jessica Porr, Noah Riggenbach, Nicole Shaffer, Isabel Steiner, Scott Swinehart, Carissa Thompson and Alexis Yount. Kendra Stepp then led the inductees in the National Honor Society pledge, and Emma Gochnauer described the duties and responsibilities of NHS membership. The program closed with Tyler Moomaw and Myranda Kelly distributing membership cards. Everyone was then invited to a dessert buffet.
