After a two-year absence, the Tusky Valley Back to School Blast will return Monday, Aug. 15 from 5-7 p.m. The event will be held at the middle school with activities taking place in the gym and outside.

“This was always probably one of our largest events each year, and we’re excited that we’re able to bring it back this year,” said Derek Varansky, the new superintendent for the school district.

According to Varansky, there will be plenty to see and do this year. “We’ll have an information center set up in the gym where people can find class lists, supply lists and bus times,” he said. “Parents will also have the opportunity to pay school fees early and save $5 for each class. That can add up if you have more than one child in school.”

Representatives from Aultman Hospital and the school nurse will be on hand to explain the new telehealth service being funded by a grant from the hospital.

“Our food services department is planning a meal that will be free for all who attend,” Varansky said. “Outside we’ll have some inflatables for the kids to play in and enjoy, a DJ playing music, and some of our sports teams will be leading games and activities.”

Lock 7 Hair Studio also will provide free haircuts during the event.

Be a part of history

Everyone attending the event will be invited to write a message and sign a metal beam that will become part of the new school building. “One year from now, we’ll open that new building, so everyone gets to be a part of history,” Varansky said. “We’re also very excited to be able to offer tours of the construction site as part of the event.”

The tours will be led by representatives of Lesko Architects, Hammond Construction and school administrators. “When you see it up close, it’s super impressive,” Varansky said. “We really just hope people come and they have a good time. it’s a great time for kids to get familiar with the building with their families and just do some fun stuff that doesn’t cost any money.”

Varansky said the event is run by teachers and others who volunteer their time. “It’s just a good time to celebrate coming back to school.”

A few ground rules for tours

The school district suggested the following protocol to ensure everyone’s safety during the construction tours:

—Participants must remain within the designated tour areas at all times.

—Adult supervision of children at all times is critical inside the construction zone.

—Dress for safety: No heels, open-toed shoes or sandals will be permitted on the tour.

—Due to the site being a construction zone, wheelchairs, strollers and walkers cannot be safely accommodated on these tours.
