The Wayne County Schools Career Center Auto Technologies program was recently recertified as an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-approved educational facility. Senior auto technologies instructor Kevin Wilson and junior instructor Richard Shetler went through an all-day “very detailed” inspection of the school’s lab, equipment and facilities, said Wilson. The inspection also verifies the qualifications of the instructors, to make sure they are well-educated in their field of expertise. The National Automotive Technical Education Foundation, a division of ASE, ensures that training centers such as the career center and technical colleges are up to standards, Wilson said. The career center was first certified in 1994 with instructor Tom Michalec, and has been recertified every five years since that time. Students in auto technologies diagnose, maintain and repair a wide range of cars and light trucks, using the same advanced diagnostic and repair equipment as master technicians to troubleshoot complex automotive systems. They begin with basic repairs and advance through the two-year program to high-tech vehicle computers and mechanical systems. This year there are 30 high school juniors and seniors in the program, and after the first semester, many seniors are placed in automotive service businesses in Wayne County and surrounding areas for on-the-job training. Career center graduates from auto technologies are currently working in many Wayne County businesses.
