Twelve students from the Wayne County Schools Career Center’s early childhood education and care program including seniors Ciarra McGeorge of Waynedale, left, Kathryn Crawford of Rittman and Destiny Ream of Northwestern recently competed at the State Educators Rising Competition in Bexley under the direction of instructor Debra McDonald.

                        

Twelve students from the Wayne County Schools Career Center’s early childhood education and care program recently competed at the State Educators Rising Competition in Bexley under the direction of instructor Debra McDonald.

Competing in Ethical Dilemma were seniors Destiny Ream of Northwestern, Kathryn Crawford of Rittman and Ciarra McGeorge of Waynedale. The team prepared a presentation detailing their response to an ethical dilemma a teacher might encounter in the education field.

Competing in Creative Lecture was senior Makayla Stormer of Northwestern. Stormer prepared and presented a “Ted Talk” explaining how teachers might provide Trauma Induced Care for all students.

Senior Jordan Holley of Waynedale competed in Exploring Support Services and earned an eighth-place medal. Holley prepared a presentation detailing his experience job-shadowing an intervention specialist working with preschool children.

Junior Belinda Short of Orrville competed in CDA Weekly Lesson Plan and Implementation and earned second place overall. Short designed five learning activities around the theme of “Community Helpers” for preschool children.

Placing third in Children’s Literature PreK and qualifying to compete at nationals was the senior team of Cielo Wilkin of Smithville and Jenna Messner of Chippewa. Wilkin and Messner wrote and illustrated a children’s book titled “I Don’t Want to Go to Sleep.”

The junior team of Ali Clements of Chippewa; Brittany Gasser and Andrea Pittman, both of Norwayne; and Allison Steiner, home-schooled, took second place at state and are national qualifiers in the Researching Learning Challenges event. The team worked together to create a research paper and presentation detailing teaching strategies to support children with ADHD.

Pittman also has been elected as a state officer for Educators Rising and will be inducted in April.

Students qualifying for nationals will compete at the National Educators Rising Convention and Competition to be held in Washington, D.C. June 17-21.
