The West Holmes FFA celebrated FFA Week March 10-14.

FFA Week is held on a national level in February, but the chapter celebrates in March for better weather and safety of its members. Throughout the week students had Dress Days, Truck and Tractor Days, an assembly, and the FFA hosted a petting zoo in the ag room with different animals each day.

Monday’s Dress Day was Blue and Gold Day for students and staff or Official Dress Day for members, and there were rabbits in the ag room.

Tuesday’s Dress Day was Tourist Tuesday (dress like you are on a dream vacation). There were goats in the ag room, and it was Drive Your Truck to School Day. The truck categories and their winners were as follows: Oldest, Jarrett Schafer; Newest, Kaelyn Alvarado; Dirtiest, Keith Hawkins; Cleanest, Natty Lint; Smallest, Wyatt Troyer; Biggest, Charlie Cooper; and Judge’s Choice, Jenna Sheldon.

Wednesday’s Dress Day was Twin Day, and there were dairy cattle in the ag room.

Thursday’s Dress Day was Teachers and Students Switch Day (teachers dressed like students and students dressed like teachers), and there were horses and a donkey in the ag room. Students also were able to have cart rides from Chip the pony.

Friday’s Dress Day was Dress Like a Farmer Day, and there were exotic animals in the ag room including an ostrich, camel, mini zebu and exotic deer. A Tractor And Anything But a Car Parade was held during the day.

The winners of each category were as follows, Oldest, Zander Croskey; Newest, Reese Anderson; Dirtiest, Patrick Weaver; Cleanest, Billy Patten; Smallest, Mr. Debinet; Biggest, Nate Sprang; and Judge’s Choice, Darren Gallion.

On Friday afternoon the West Holmes FFA held Ag Olympics, where several sports and clubs participated in different contests to showcase their ag-related skills. These contests included Bale Toss, Egg Toss, Milk the Cow, Water Bucket Carry, Wheelbarrow Race, Sack Race, Milk Chug and an obstacle course.

After the assembly the WH FFA Week ended and the chapter was very happy with the number of students and staff participating during the week and showing their support.

Thank you to Schlauchs Exotics for providing Friday’s petting zoo and thanks to all the FFA members, students and faculty for making this week possible. We are beyond grateful for you.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, members of the West Holmes FFA competed in the General Livestock and Dairy Judging Contests at the ATI Equine Center. During dairy judging, contestants placed dairy cows, took a test over dairy, read pedigrees and completed a sire selection scenario. The dairy judging team was the 11th-place team. Individually, Reece Anderson was 38th, Emma McDonnell was 42nd, Ian Barr was 56th and Logan Van Dalen was 85th. There were 26 teams and 307 individuals in the contest.

During general livestock, contestants judged beef cattle, swine, sheep and goats. They also used EPD sheets to identify the strongest animals on paper and completed a market grid. Participants included Casey Ogi, who placed 71st, and Blake Patterson, who placed 151st.
