Ranking for the U.S. News & World Report list is based on federal and state data from the 2017-18 school year. It also takes into consideration statistics from college-prep, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs. To finalize the list, schools are scored on six indicators of school quality including college-readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance (based on how black, Hispanic and low-income students performed on state assessments compared with those who are not underserved in the state), and graduation rates.
