The 12th annual “You’re Not Alone” Youth Camp focuses on providing a safe, welcoming and inviting time for youth age 7-17. Campers gain confidence, build social skills and express themselves.

The death of a loved one is often one of the most challenging experiences for a person. However, this experience can be even more devastating for youth. Often, there are not many opportunities for youth to share their feelings with others about their grieving experience.

A bereavement care staff member assesses all youth who want to participate in camp. This allows the counselors to help build rapport, gain a unique understanding of the youth’s needs and provide the best possible support plan for a positive camp experience.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, this year’s camp is limited to four one-day camps on July 27, 28, 29 and 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 10 kids maximum per day. Youth age 12-17 can sign up for either Tuesday or Thursday, and youth age 7-11 can sign up for either Wednesday or Friday. The camp will take place at the outdoor pavilion at the Community Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia.

“With the cancellation of last year’s camp, our bereavement care staff worked hard to make adjustments that allow us to move forward safely,” said David Weaver, director of counseling services at Community Hospice. “While we are sad that we cannot attend Camp Wanake, we are excited to welcome back our campers for a fun-filled day to enjoy the outdoors, socialize and work through some of the challenges a loss in their life presents.”

Community Hospice Bereavement Care staff and volunteers will lead the camp. Light breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided. Youth may sign up for one day only and according to their age at the time of camp. The camp’s theme is “Under Construction.” Activities include an art project, music, scavenger hunt, water games, yard games and a memorial keepsake. Campers are asked to dress accordingly for the weather.

“You’re Not Alone” Youth Camp is offered free of charge. Application packets and more information can be obtained by calling or emailing Kelsie Gunnoe, bereavement care coordinator, at 800-947-7284 or bereavement@myhospice.org. Spots are limited to 10 youth per day.
