Every Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Coshocton Senior Center, anyone age 60 and over is invited to Bingocize. This is a health promotion program that combines the game of bingo with fall-preventative exercises such as sitting and standing. Participants can win prizes when they get a bingo.

"Scientists are continuing to find evidence that exercise is one of the best ways to help improve your brain. When you exercise your brain, it starts to produce stronger and smarter brain cells. Exercises help your brain cells connect with one another, which improves your memory and thinking skills. It also creates new blood vessels, which are the main energy source for hard-working brain cells. As we get going today, always remember to maintain correct posture during the exercise. Stop if you encounter pain. A little discomfort is OK, but it shouldn't hurt," said April George, co-director at the senior center.

The first exercise was morning walk march in place for 40 seconds, then bingo, thumb to fingers and bingo, followed by staggering stance, other simple exercises and ending with the ballerina.

Resistance bands for exercises like chest presses, cardio exercise, strength training and stretching exercises must all play a role to keep the body in balance and as flexible as possible.

"Helen Stone won four bingos today. She is our big winner," George said. "Two weeks ago we had eight people bingo at the same time."

Bingocize can increase older adults' functional fitness, provide knowledge of fall prevention and provide social engagement at the senior center. One doesn't need to register.

The Coshocton Senior Center has many programs available including meals for those age 60 and over, home-delivered meals, AAA9 passport services, grocery ordering and delivery, assistance in getting a Golden Buckeye card, a monthly food program, and Produce Day.
