The Tuscarawas County Public Library System invites the whole family to participate in this year’s summer reading program titled Oceans of Possibilities with activities and contests.

Kids, teens and adults can read, attend programs and earn prizes this summer at the Tuscarawas County Main Library and the Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek and Tuscarawas branches from June 6 through July 31.

Library customers can download the Beanstack Tracker app onto any of their smart devices or visit tusclibrary.beanstack.org on a home computer to register for summer reading. Through Beanstack participants can track reading, participate in challenges and engage with literacy activities.

“Parents are able to create a single account and add their children as readers so they can keep everything in one place and don’t have to juggle multiple accounts,” public relations associate Molly Calhoun Bowers said.

It only takes 20 minutes of reading each day to help prevent summer learning loss, and the library’s program can help.

Kids are challenged to read 15 books this summer, and with each book completed, they will be entered in to a grand-prize drawing. Once they read 15 books, they earn a free book they can pick up from any TCPL location.

Teens and adults are challenged to read 15 hours this summer. For each hour read, they gain an entry for the grand prize. Just like the kids challenge, adults and teens will be entered in a monthly prize drawing for each program they attend.

“The program is designed to help kids get excited about reading and learning, even when school is out,” Calhoun Bowers said. “We know that not everyone has access to a smart device or home computer and internet, so we made sure to include a paper reading log for the challenge in our summer program guide.”

The library system will kick off its summer reading program with a party at each of its locations. Each summer reading kick-off party will include music, food and things for the whole family. Dates and times of each party are as follows:

—Strasburg Branch Library, 356 Fifth St. SW, May 31 at 5:30 p.m.

—Tuscarawas County Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, New Philadelphia, June 1 at 5:30 p.m.

—Bolivar Branch Library, 455 W. Water St., June 2 at 5:30 p.m.

—Sugarcreek Branch Library, 120 S. Broadway, June 7 at 3 p.m.

—Tuscarawas Branch Library, 209 S. Main St., June 7 at 4:30 p.m.

The county library’s eight-week summer reading program is free and open to everyone. All five libraries will host a variety of programs geared toward adults including cooking and genealogy classes, a film festival, author visits, and art and music programs. Children will have themed story times, crafts, programs and live animal encounters, and teens can participate in a craft camp, multiple gaming competitions and more.

For details about specific program offerings, pick up the library’s programming newsletter at the nearest Tuscarawas County Public Library System location or find it online at www.tusclibrary.org.
