For the first time, the Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host Conversation Connections, a new program designed to connect English and Spanish speakers through conversation and cultural exchange. The program will take place every Thursday from June 12 through July 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Tuscarawas County Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, New Philadelphia.

The program is led by customer service assistants Emmie Troyer and Deborah Kenney, who also teach the library’s English Language Learners class. Each session will provide time for both English and Spanish conversation, with the first 30 minutes dedicated to English and the second half to Spanish. A theme will guide each session to spark dialogue and introduce useful vocabulary and language structures.

“A big part of being able to speak a second language involves the opportunity to regularly practice that language so you don’t lose what you’ve already learned,” Kenney said.

The program was inspired by feedback from the community. Several people contacted the library looking for opportunities to practice Spanish with others while students in the ELL class expressed interest in practicing English with native speakers.

“One of the things I hope folks take away from Conversation Connections is a sense of confidence in themselves and their ability to communicate,” Troyer said. “We hope to foster a welcoming environment so that people can feel comfortable taking chances and putting themselves out there in regard to practicing the language they are learning.”

Kenney emphasized the broader impact of language learning. “I am so excited for this program because it is going to provide so many opportunities to grow and strengthen our community. Learning another language gives you access to so many amazing stories and experiences that you would not get to have otherwise, and I am excited for people to bring their experiences to this program and tell their stories.”
