The Tuscarawas Philharmonic will perform an evening of romantic music in a concert titled “Suites for the Sweet,” welcoming pianist Avery Gagliano for the event. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center.

Washingtonian Avery Gagliano is a full scholarship piano fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music, under the tutelage of Jonathan Biss and Gary Graffman. She is a 2019 Young Arts Winner in Music, a young artist of the Artemisia Akademie at Yale, a three-year winner of the U.S. Chopin Foundation Scholarship (2016-18), a Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation (2014-16), a nominated recipient of the Inaugural Outstanding Young Artist Achievement Award by the National Chamber Ensemble in 2016, and a Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship recipient from 2011-16.

Gagliano’s success has taken her to stages at some of the most prestigious festivals and concert venues such as the Aspen International Music Festival, the Oxford Philomusica Piano Festival, Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Strathmore Concert Hall in Maryland, Ravinia Pavilion and Millennium Park in Chicago, Greene Space at WQXR New York, United Nations Headquarters (sharing stage with Lang Lang), Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, and in Munich, Germany and Paris, France.

With the Philharmonic, she will perform Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor.”

“It’s a classic tour de force for piano and orchestra,” music director Eric Benjamin said. “I am so looking forward to hearing Ms. Gagliano storm the battlements with the huge chords and thundering octaves. And the piece has those robust melodies that are so delectable and fancy prestidigitations that are really dazzling. It’s a joy to play and to listen to.”

The orchestra also will perform Antonin Dvorak’s “Czech Suite” and Gabriel Faure’s “Suite Masques et Bergamasquesto” to round out the evening of romantic music.

“These two suites, played back to back, comprise 35 minutes of utter charm. These works are not so well-known, so everyone can be surprised and delighted at once,” Benjamin said.

As a special Valentine treat, cupcakes and cake pops baked especially for the occasion will be available for purchase in the lobby, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Each item will cost between $1 and $5.

Tickets are available at www.TuscarawasPhilharmonic.org or by calling the Performing Arts Center box office at 330-308-6400. Tickets range from $24-$36 with student and senior discounts available.
