Prevent the summer learning slide through the Tuscarawas County Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program.

“Kids who don’t practice reading during the summer can lose up to two months of reading ability,” library director Michelle McMorrow Ramsell said. “Learning doesn’t need to stop just because classes ended.”

Library customers can download the Beanstack Tracker app onto any of their smart devices or visit www.tusclibrary.beanstack.org on a home computer to register for summer reading. Through Beanstack participants can track reading, participate in challenges and engage with literacy activities.

“Parents are able to create a single account and add their children as readers so they can keep everything in one place and don’t have to juggle multiple accounts,” public relations associate Megan Kovalaske-Grimm said.

Kovalaske-Grimm said it only takes 20 minutes of reading each day to help prevent summer learning loss, and the library’s program can help.

Kids are challenged to read 15 books this summer. For every five books they read, they gain an entry for the grand prize. Once they read 15 books, they earn a free book they can pick up from any TCPL location. They also have the opportunity to complete five activities that will earn them an extra entry for the grand prize for each activity completed.

Teens and adults are challenged to read 15 hours this summer. For every five hours read, they gain an entry for the grand prize. Teens will receive a free treat when they complete the 15 hours of reading. Just like the kids’ challenge, adults and teens will be able to complete up to five additional activities to earn extra entries for the grand prize.

“The program is designed to excite children about reading and learning even when school is out,” Kovalaske-Grimm said. “We know that not everyone has access to a smart device or home computer and internet, so we made sure to include a paper version of the challenge in our summer program guide that will be mailed to homes and available in our libraries in the upcoming week.”

Summer reading includes eight weeks of programming including a puppet show, a mermaid party and even virtual animal shows. Some programs will have limited in-person attendance, others will be strictly virtual and some will offer self-directed kits that can be picked up at the library.
