Work on new park could begin soon in Mineral City
Construction of basketball and pickleball courts for the new Mineral City park could begin soon, according to Rick Cain, parks and recreation chair for Mineral City Council. Cain told council members at their April 10 meeting that Vasco Sports hopes to start work earlier than the originally anticipated timeframe of late July if possible.
According to Cain’s comments in the past, the village plans to build the new park using only grant funds, which means no village funds will be dedicated to the project. Cain went on to say he received a quote of $74,403 from Snider Recreation in North Royalton to install playground equipment and drinking water fountains.
Committee members also have met with Pace-Sankar Landscaping of New Philadelphia to obtain an estimate for seeding the site and installing a retaining wall if needed. Council President Terry Nill said three trees have been donated for the park.
Reporting for the street committee, Sam Moore said a residence on Fair Street needs a catch basin installed to stop storm water from flowing down the driveway. Council approved the purchase of a grate from Stony Point Supply in Sugarcreek.
Moore also requested a zoning violation letter be sent to a resident on North High Street regarding furniture that needs to be removed.
Mayor Laurie Green said she received a letter from Appalachian Resources Development Group expressing an interest in leasing village property for gas and oil development. The property includes the baseball field on Lindentree Road.
Green said she had no interest in allowing fracking on the ballfield property, and most council members agreed, although Cain said fracking has been allowed on other village property in the past. No action was taken.
Green also reported the owner of the skilled gaming business on High Street has picked up a permit application and that they have 30 days to return the application for approval.
Fiscal Officer Becky Carpenter said she obtained the loan proceeds from First Federal Community Bank for the 2014 GMC truck the village agreed to purchase from the Village of Carrolton. The truck was picked up by Moore.
